For engagement sessions, I love a statement dress (or two)! It is so fun to dress up and feel confident for your photos! My go-to is often Lulu’s! They have some really great, affordable dresses that are perfect for your session and can easily be worn again on a date or to a friend’s wedding! I have a few tips on picking out dresses below and then I’ve included some dresses I’ve had my eye on!
For starters, keep in mind the season we are photographing your engagement session. Lighter colors suit summer and spring, while warmer, richer colors suit fall and winter. Your wedding colors can also act as an inspiration for engagement session color choices, especially if you want your Save the Date cards or Wedding Website to coordinate with your wedding invitations.
I LOVE a statement dress! Bring on the color! 🙂 I tend to be more drawn to solid color dresses rather than ones that have print. Rather than print, I tend to go for texture instead! Think lace, layers, and formal fabrics.
I love a long flowy dress, but I also like it to have some fitting up top. I know the style of tops and dresses right now is very flowy, but since I personally carry my weight in my hips, if it is too baggy on top, I feel like I’m in a bag! I think a dress that is fitted somewhere, especially on the top, is really flattering.
Play to your strengths: pick outfits you feel great in and accentuate the features you love about yourself! If you are self-conscious about a body part, I recommend not having it be prominently displayed. For example, I find that some of my brides are self-conscious about their upper arms. If this is the case, I wouldn’t recommend sleeveless. I want you to feel your very best and not worry about the way something looks. Conversely, if you love those biceps, show them off!!!
Here are some great shops to check out: Lulus, Baltic Born, Vici, Red Dress Boutique, Morning Lavendar, and One Loved Babe, Nordstrom, Dillards, Anthropologie, Altard State, Asos, Banana Republic, and Madewell.
All of these options are from Lulu’s. The bra situation can sometimes be a little tricky with dresses from Lulu’s, especially if the dress is backless like in the second row. No biggie, but you’ll want to sort it out before your session! Lol! I order from Lulu’s all the time! The dresses are so pretty and so flattering!
These options are from Baltic Born. I love the texture and colors of all of these!
This dress is from Red Dress, and it comes in lots of colors! They have great dresses, but they typically do sell out quickly. The prices and selection are great though.
Always feel free to send me an email and show me some options if you need any help! If you need any inspiration on engagement session locations, please head over to this blog post!
