Surrounded by conversation of the global oil market and profit margins, Carla and Tom met in a seemingly very unromantic way. Carla, who works in finance for Morgan Stanley, was at a work conference with Tom, who works in the petroleum industry. They both attended the business conference in Denver where they sat at the same table for lunch. While their conversation centered on petroleum and finance, Tom noticed Carla and kept thinking about her.
The next day at work, Tom called Carla, who was in a business meeting. Tom maintains that calling her in the middle of a conference was “bad timing,” but Carla’s friends and family see it as perseverance. He was determined to win Carla’s heart. Carla was flattered by Tom’s bold move, and at their date to watch the Super Bowl, their interest in the game quickly waned as they became focused solely on each other. They left the sports bar for an intimate dinner where they would talk and begin falling in love.
Tom and Carla’s officiant told a story about them that hit me right in the gut. The weeks leading up to the wedding day can certainly be a bit chaotic for a couple as they tie up loose ends and finalize plans. Couples are pulled in a thousand directions as they prepare to wed in front of all of their friends and family. However, this couple put all of their own stresses aside, and set all of their focus on their dear friends who had recently become new parents. Their friends’ baby was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at six months of age, and they struggled to get proper care for their little one. Tom and Carla, during the week of their wedding, tapped into any and all of their resources. They eventually were able to work their connections in Houston and helped find a doctor who agreed to see the baby immediately and begin care. Cue all the tears. Amidst all of the wedding planning, they prioritized their friends who needed help. It says so much of who they are as a couple that they would place their focus on their friends on the week of their wedding.
That story certainly characterizes Tom and Carla’s relationship with their friends and family, and their relationship with each other. They are whole-heartedly devoted to their friends and family and to one another. And, let’s face it, they have a blast together!
Carla and Tom, it was an honor to share in your gorgeous day with you. I wish you many more adventures in Colorado and Austin, and many more dinner dates at Uchi. Best wishes to you both!
